Japan constructs additional classrooms for Medicos special school in Shoshanguve.

The Government of Japan, through its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) Programme, will extend its assistance in the amount of US$ 71,943 to the School Governing Body of Medicos Special School for the construction of three additional classrooms.

The Grant Contract to this effect will be signed at the premises of the Embassy of Japan in Groenkloof, Pretoria at 11am on Thursday, 8th November 2007.

His Excellency, Mr. Akihiko Furuya, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan, together with representatives from Medicos Special School will attend the ceremony.

The Government of Japan strives towards enhancing a positive culture of learning, teaching and service delivery in the education environment. It is commonly agreed that the enhancement of basic education is one of the key factors in promoting sustainable economic and social development. To this effect, primary education is one of the areas in which Japan is keen to assist with a view of contributing to poverty eradication in developing countries.

Medicos Special School, established in 1989, is the only school in Shoshanguve to cater for learners with mental disabilities. The donation will construct three additional classrooms benefiting 60 children in Grade1 to Grade 6, thus alleviating overcrowding. The Government of Japan hopes that the new facilities will provide the educators and learners of Medicos Special School with an environment conducive to effective teaching and learning.
